Isolated vs. cross margin mechanics from our Kraken guide, applied to Binance — where its margin product structure actually differs.

Margin Trading: Isolated vs. Cross, and What Borrowing Actually Costs covers what margin borrowing, interest, isolated vs. cross margin, and liquidation actually mean. That doesn’t change here — this guide covers what’s specifically different about Binance’s margin product.
Where Binance differs from Kraken
- Two distinct margin modes. Binance offers both Cross Margin (one shared margin account across positions) and Isolated Margin (a separate margin account per trading pair) as genuinely separate account types you choose between up front, rather than a per-position toggle — worth understanding before you fund either.
- Broader pair selection for isolated margin. Binance supports isolated margin on a wide range of pairs beyond the top few assets, which matters if you’re trading something other than BTC or ETH on margin.
- Interest rate transparency. Binance displays borrowing interest rates per asset in the margin interface before you borrow — check this figure specifically, since it varies by asset and market conditions and compounds for as long as the position is open, exactly as described in the core margin guide.
Walkthrough: opening an isolated margin position on Binance
- Enable margin trading on your account — this requires a separate opt-in and its own eligibility check beyond standard account verification.
- Choose Isolated Margin mode and select your trading pair.
- Transfer collateral into that specific isolated margin account — remember this collateral is ring-fenced to this one pair, unlike cross margin.
- Borrow and set your leverage, checking the displayed interest rate for the asset you’re borrowing.
- Place the order, then monitor your margin level and liquidation price in the isolated margin position view — not the same view as your cross margin or spot balances.
Risk
Margin trading can lose you more than your deposited collateral, and interest accrues whether the trade is working or not, on any platform. Read Position Sizing before opening a margin position for the first time. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
